GHOST BRIGADE took the world by surprise. Their debut album "Guided by Fire" (2007) was received with raving reviews and praised by the music press all around the globe. Obviously the Finns hit a nerve with their highly original blend of Post-Rock, Metalcore, Progressive Rock, Death and Doom Metal. As a result "Guided by Fire" received laurels for being "impressively atmospheric, dark, intelligent and passionate", while letting "KATATONIA's grief collide with the wrath of NEUROSIS".
When GHOST BRIGADE was formed in 2005 in Jyväskylä, Finland, there were a few things that were agreed upon before the songwriting began. This would be a band beyond musical limitations and open-mindedness would be the main approach to making music. Anything would be tried out, regardless of if it's Pop, Metal or anything in between. In the end, quality, sincerity and being satisfied to your own doings are the only things that truly matter. "We think that if you don't put your heart into your music, you shouldn't be doing music in the first place", declare the band members.
Only one year after their founding, GHOST BRIGADE release their first and only 4-track demo CD, which bears the simple title "Demo, 2006" and paves the way to a record deal with Season of Mist. In many ways, "Guided by Fire" is a natural continuation to that well received 4-track demo CD but at the same time, it dares to visit many unexplored territories, brings a lot of new elements to the table as well as shows characteristics previously unknown to the band. And because of just that, it hopefully has the ability to challenge the listener. "We try not to over-analyze things. When we compose a song, we just kind of go with the flow and see what comes out of it. We know in our hearts if it's a GHOST BRIGADE song or not. It really is as simple as that. If we get goose bumps from it, then it's good. And even if we have always tried to avoid locking ourselves in a genre and are incessantly searching for new ways to express ourselves, at the same time, when we make music together it always seems to come out as something dark, oppressive, melodic, dynamic and heavy. Those are adjectives we couldn't escape even if we wanted to. So there's definitely a common thread in there that ties all of our songs."
"Guided By Fire" was recorded, mixed and mastered during winter and spring 2007 at Seawolf Studios (AMORPHIS, SWALLOW THE SUN) which is located on an tiny island just outside Helsinki and partly at the band's home studio in Jyväskylä. Engineering duties were handled by band's house-engineer Mikko Poikolainen and by Aaro Seppovaara, who is better known to some as the guitarist and vocalist of Finnish rock band BLAKE. "We have worked with Mikko many times before when we all played in different bands before GHOST BRIGADE so we knew he was the only guy for the job and Seawolf would be the perfect place to put the record on tape. Mikko knows exactly where we're coming from and how we want GHOST BRIGADE to sound like, so obviously working with him and Aaro was easy. They both also liked the material so it goes without saying that was a big bonus. We knew we could trust them and they would both do their best to make the album sound as good as it does even if the recording process wasn't so easy at times. We owe them the world."
With "Guided by Fire" these five long-time friends, vocalist Manne Ikonen, guitarists Wille Naukkarinen and Tommi Kiviniemi, bassist Janne Julin and Veli-Matti Suihkonen on drums and percussion have created something that you just can't ignore by saying "I've heard all this before" or "It's pretty OK but it sounds a bit like this and that". You have to dig deeper than that to fully understand what's in the core of these 45 minutes. "If someone asks us what our influences are, we won't necessarily have a definitive answer", guitarist Wille comments. "I guess we are influenced by anything that we think sounds good. We all have wide and different tastes in music, everything from Pop to electronic music and from Rock to Death Metal. We just try our best to make music we'd like to hear our ultimate favourite band play. We don't really waste our time figuring out what influences us and what doesn't. And besides, the source of motivation to do a new song doesn't have to be other music at all. It can be a movie, something you've seen or heard on the street during the day or a state of mind you're in. Anything that moves you, basically."
The critics agree for a change, but far from being overwhelmed by their instant success, GHOST BRIGADE continue to simply work hard on their music. Appearing at renowned festivals like Hellfest (France) or Tuska (Finland) they immediately win their audiences over with breathtaking live performances, which have matured during the years since the band's founding in 2005. In the meantime session keyboard player Aleksi Munter (SWALLOW THE SUN, INSOMNIUM) is becoming a full member. Due to the success of their debut, GHOST BRIGADE's next step is being anticipated with great expectations.
In 2009 GHOST BRIGADE released their second masterpiece "Isolation Songs" and the response is even more enthusiastic. Capturing the title "Album of the Month" in Germany's Metal Hammer and highest scores in soundchecks and reviews of many other magazines all over Europe the Finns seem to be soaring to the sky. Again recorded in Helsinki's Seawolf Studios with Antti Malinen, "Isolation Songs" takes the distinct style of these Finns to a higher level without producing a "Guided by Fire" part II. This second album is exactly as heavier, gloomier, more extreme, varied and dynamic as it should be, while adding new elements at the same time. Delve down deep into these "Isolation Songs" rejoice and weep. This second album witnessed GHOST BRIGADE gained them entries into 'Best of the year' lists all over Europe as well as invitations to festivals like Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting, Hellfest, Summer Breeze and many more, where they performed memorable shows. As a final reward GHOST BRIGADE opened for their countrymen AMORPHIS during their European tour of 2010, which was sold out in many venues.
This summer the masters of melancholy return with their most complete masterpiece so far: GHOST BRIGADE no longer surprise the world with their third full-length "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us", but stunningly succeed to live up to already sky high expectations. Curveballs keep people on the edge of their seats. Complacency reduces excitement and expectations. If an artist comes out of the gate swinging for the fences, fear creeps in regarding their resolve to deliver even more each successive time. Finland gothic-alternative-doom-death band Ghost Brigade have two exemplary full lengths to their cache (2007’s “Guided By Fire” and 2009’s “Isolation Songs“), setting up this third release for a breakthrough. I didn’t believe the quintet would merely coast into this important recording with a cut and paste effort of similar material. When reading early discussion from the band members themselves online about the contrasts between heaviness and melody, darkness and tranquility on “Until Fear No Longer Defines Us”, this writer salivates as dynamic constructs make for an emotionally exhilarating continuous journey - subsequently winning me over again. Confidently striding into the album with a 4:17 acoustic piece “In The Woods” vocalist Manne Ikonen and guitarists Tommi Kiviniemi and Wille Naukkrinen are somber, as lines like ‘It’s so weird that when you get older/ feels like time is going faster’ reverberate in this turbulent world. The tempo of the album barely moves beyond doom pacing until the fourth cut “Traces Of Liberty” - almost setting you up for this atmospheric lull before laying down the thunderous 70’s Sabbath electric riffs, chest shuddering alternative bass and the steady, hypnotic drum parts from Veli-Matti Suihkonen. The follow up “Divine Act Of Lunacy” takes the best elements of Katatonia and Sentenced, surrounds them rhythmically with a tribal Tool backdrop and once again hones in with pacing and arrangement skills that force engagement of the deepest kind from the listener - kinetic, reflective, and on another level.
Manne appears to be opening his melodic voice horizons, saving the harsh growls and screams for the more sonic abrasive moments. An epic like the 8:50 “Breakwater” builds off of this cyclical guitar sequence that rolls in and out like the coming tide as Manne roars and sustains screams while the arrangement slows with this deep seeded working class despair. Their progressive moments are also low-key, such as the off-time clean guitar/drum sequence that serves as a centerpiece for “Cult Of Decay” that again brings to mind some 80’s alternative artists like The Cure or Big Country. The total package from songwriting to cover art to production are all top notch, reinforcing the seriousness of Ghost Brigade not only in a live environment but also in the studio. My definition of music and its infinite appeal relies on musicians who come together as one while at the same time striving for creative visions and outlooks built upon personal observations, experience and genuine continual growth. Ghost Brigade set their sights on everything that makes me return to heavy music - the freeing nature, the lack of hard nosed judgment, the lows and highs, and the discovery of newness even after taking in the same album months or years beyond its conception. Arise and join the Ghost Brigade legion.

Wieviele Tierarten verschwinden in diesem Moment aus dem Leben, nur weil der Mensch in seiner Gier unersättlich ist? Wieviel Leid geschieht auf der Welt genau in dieser einen Sekunde? Werde ich morgen noch genau derselbe sein der ich heute bin, oder werde ich überhaupt noch am Leben teilhaben können? "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us" führt den mit "Isolation Songs" eingeschlagenen Weg konsequent fort und übertrifft mit einem makellosen Wechselspiel aus tiefer Hoffnungslosigkeit und auflodernden Lichtschimmern, die immer wieder für wohlige Gänsehaut sorgen, die große Erwartungshaltung sogar noch einmal um ein Vielfaches. Die Jungs um den charismatischen Sänger Manne Ikonen haben mit "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us" ein emotional eindringliches Album veröffentlicht, das ähnliche Bands wie KATATONIA oder OPETH in letzter Zeit nicht erschaffen konnten, und unterstreichen damit ihren Ausnahmestatus völlig zu Recht. Was folgt ist eine Reise durch unser Bewusstsein. Das Album beginnt mit "In The Woods" ungewohnt ruhig mit akustischen Gitarren und unter die Haut gehenden Clean Vocals, bevor die Wogen mit dem folgenden "Clawmaster" zum ersten Mal über den Zuhörer hereinbrechen und die gesamte Wirkungsbreite der Band eindrucksvoll unter Beweis stellt: Verzweifelte Growls, manchmal rauer, immer eloquenter und lebendig servierter Klargesang, ruhige Breaks, aufbrausende Passagen und hymnische Übergänge treiben die Tränen in die Augen und bescheren ein Hochgefühl der Sinne, das schließlich im erneut ruhigen und fast schon alternativem "Grain" und dem eigentlichen Highlight des Albums gipfelt: "Breakwater". Trotz einer Spiellänger von knapp neun Minuten ist dieser Song keine einzige Sekunde zu lang und verzaubert nicht nur mit den typischen Stilelementen, die die Finnen so einzigartig machen, sondern darüber hinaus mit einem doomigen Mittelteil und unbeschreiblich schönen Melodielinien, die das Prädikat "episch" tatsächlich verdient haben. Genau in diesem Punkt liegt die übermächtige Stärke von GHOST BRIGADE: Trotz Atmosphäre, Tiefe und sämtlichen Spannungsbögen bilden diese wunderschönen, immer berührenden Melodien den zentralen Kernpunkt, der die Musik der Finnen harmonisch und authentisch macht. "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us" ist ein Album, das leidenschaftlicher, überraschender, ruhiger, aufwühlender und mitreißender einfach nicht sein könnte, und nach einem Durchlauf noch einmal, noch einmal und noch einmal gehört werden möchte. GHOST BRIGADE haben den verdienten Erfolg von "Isolation Songs" wiederholen können. "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us" ist ein klarer Favorit auf das Album 2011.

En effet, depuis leur passage remarqué au Hellfest 2010, les Finnois de Ghost Brigade n’ont pas chômé. Ils reviennent cet été avec un troisième album au titre qui claque comme un slogan, très politique, voire philosophique ou même métaphysique : Until Fear No Longer Defines Us (" Jusqu’à ce que la peur cesse de nous définir "). Après un premier morceau, " In The Woods ", passant comme une douce brise sur un été de canicule et mettant déjà en exergue les qualités vocales de Manne Ikonen sur fond d’arpège obsédant, le ton change et monte d’un cran : " UFNLDU " offre résolument le visage plus heavy, le plus sombre et le plus dynamique que la Brigade Fantôme ait jamais dévoilé. Avec des accents qui courent du hardcore le plus brutal au grunge tendance Temple of the Dog ou Mother Love Bone en frôlant un doom metal à la My Dying Bride, nourris d’une progressivité à propos de laquelle on peut même évoquer l’influence manifeste d’Alan Parsons Project (sur " Chamber " et " Cult Of Decay ", notamment), chaque morceau est plus pénétrant, plus puissant, plus surprenant que le précédent. Ces changements d’atmosphère sont admirablement servis par la versatilité magistrale de la voix d’Ikonen, tantôt claire, tantôt rauque, toujours éloquente et saisissante. Dans cet ensemble de très haute tenue, nichées au milieu de l’album, deux pistes réussissent la performance de sortir encore du lot : " Grain " et " Breakwater " (respectivement plus de 5 et presque 9 minutes de pure volupté). C’est tellement bon que ça vous tirerait presque une larme... Bref, Until Fear No Longer Defines Us est un assemblage infiniment riche et subtil, formidablement réussi, musicalement et dans ses textes, rempli de passion, de fureur et d’intelligence jusqu’au goulot, comme un champagne d’un millésime exceptionnel, mais à consommer sans modération. Il ne reste plus qu’à compter les jours avant le passage de Ghost Brigade au Nouveau Casino, à Paris, le 16 octobre prochain : on y sera, pour sûr on y sera... Et pour finir, comme convenu, le résumé en deux mots : attention, tuerie !
Quelle belle surprise lorsque j’ai reçu le nouvel album de Ghost Brigade. A peine chargé dans le lecteur je l’ai écouté d’une traite, impatiente de découvrir ce que nous réservait le groupe. Et je ne suis pas déçue, bien au contraire l’album est vraiment à la hauteur de mes espérances. Ghost Brigade, malgré tout, est un groupe qui reste bien mal connu, il semblerait que certains ne souhaitent pas se faire envoûter par leur musique et pour cause, apprécier Ghost Brigade c’est l’aimer pour toujours ! Découvert avec leur album précédent qui m’avait complètement enchantée, je renouvelle l’expérience (toujours appréciable) avec le nouvel opus. Le groupe reste fidèle à lui-même, il s’orchestre toujours dans un doom / death mélodique et envoûtant. Les dix titres ne sont qu’une petite merveille. A la fois puissants et mélodiques, ils nous transportent dans un autre univers ou plus rien ne subsiste sauf leur musique céleste. Et non ces adjectifs pour le moins mélioratifs ne sont pas de trop pour décrire ce que l’on ressent à l’écoute de l’album. En tout cas, en ce qui me concerne j’ai toujours été très sensible à ce genre de musique. Et dans ce groupe et dans cet album tout me plaît. En écoutant Ghost Brigade vous découvrirez un son mélodique, non pas symphonique car la mélodie est essentiellement faite par les instruments traditionnels : guitare, basse et batterie. Sans oublier la voix qui fait beaucoup également. Les claviers ne sont qu’une petite touche fantaisiste. Une très belle voix masculine aux sonorités claires, capable de transgresser vers un son plus guttural grave mais compréhensif dans certains morceaux. Peu importe son chant, il reste doux à écouter, il n’est pas désagréable et au contraire il semble possédé par les émotions. Les accords sont originaux et je ne les ai retrouvés chez encore aucun autre groupe. Très mélodieuse, leur musique est capable de nous transporter dans un monde parallèle. Leur musique nous transperce. Et ce n’est pas le nouvel album qui me fera dire le contraire. Bien sûr le groupe n’a pas tout misé sur une musique 100% mélodique. Il nous offre des titres puissants et bien rentre-dedans comme le magnifique "Clawmaster" (premier titre en écoute du nouvel album) ou encore "Traces Of Liberty" et "Divine Act Of Lunacy" qui ne sont pas mes titres préférés mais qui font partie intégrante au charme de l’album. Bien sûr mes favoris sont "Grain" et "Soulcarvers" qui me font vibrer tout comme m’ont fait vibrer "Into The Black Light" et "Concealed Revulsions" de l’album précédent "Isolation Songs". Un album sans artifice, bien réussi avec un univers à part entière et propre à lui. Un album tout simplement beau. Ghost Brigade reste et restera un groupe incontournable. Pour les déjà fans, "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us" est à posséder rapidement et pour les autres : osez la découverte !

Ghost Brigade gehörten zu den ganz großen Aufsteigern des Jahres 2009. Ihr Zweitwerk Isolation Songs hat bis heute nichts von seiner zerfetzenden Intensität eingebüßt, live stahlen die in sich gekehrten Finnen regelmäßig Headlinern wie Paradise Lost oder Amorphis die Show. Zeit, die Weichen für die Zukunft zu stellen – und das mit einem Album, das den ausgezeichneten Ruf der Post Metaller spielend rechtfertigt und sie ein gutes Stückchen weiterbringen wird. Until Fear No Longer Defines Us überzeugt per se mit derselben aufreibenden Mischung aus aggressiven, doomigen Metal-Brocken und elegischen, schmerzhaft schönen Melodien, welche bereits auf den vorherigen Werken für ausgedehnte Gänsehauteskapaden und ergriffene Andacht sorgte. Den Eindruck, dass sich Ghost Brigade wiederholen, hat man dennoch zu keiner Sekunde, was neben den stets variierenden Gesangsstilen und Härtegraden auch an der bloßen Qualität des dargebotenen Materials liegt. Selbstbewusst, aber nicht überheblich, unverkennbar, aber nicht stagnierend und nicht zuletzt von jener unverändert greifbaren Melancholie umfangen, die den Hörer schon mit den ersten Takten des gänzlich akustischen Openers In The Woods in selbige hineinträgt.
Ghost Brigaden kahden vuoden takaisen kakkoslevyn, Isolation Songsin, arvasi jo tuolloin muodostuvan yhtyeelle niin siunaukseksi kuin kiroukseksi. Ainekset bändin musiikissa eivät sinällään ole kovin omalaatuisia, mutta Isolation Songsilla niistä pusertui poikkeuksellinen timantti. Kaiho ja raskaus yhdistyvät metallissa vain harvoin yhtä luontevasti. Mihin bändi sitten voisi tuosta seuraavaksi jatkaa? Samanlaisen, samantasoisen levyn tekeminen kun tuntuisi monien mielestä epäonnistumiselta. Nimenomaan siltä tuntui Until Fear No Longer Defines Us ensimmäisillä kuunteluilla. Koska levyn julkaisuun oli kuitenkin vielä aikaa, päätin jättää sen muutamaksi viikoksi odottamaan aikaa parempaa. Seuraavalla kerralla lätty aukenikin aivan eri tavalla. Levy on läheistä sukua Isolation Songsille, mutta kun biisit ovat näin kovia, ei tunnu sopivalta naputtaa jonkinasteisesta itsensä toistamisesta. Uusia tuulahduksia, niitäkin onneksi löytyy. Avausraita In The Woods on täysverinen Ghost Brigade -raita, vaikka onkin täysin akustinen ja rummuton - kerta kaikkiaan upea tapa aloittaa levy tällaisella yllätyksellä. Toinen hieman uudenlainen kappale on Torn, jonka keskivaiheen tarttuvasti kertautuva kitarakuvio osoittaa sen, että Ghost Brigade uudistaa soundiaan vähäeleisesti ja omilla ehdoillaan. Akustisen avausraidan jälkeen kuultava kolmikko Clawmaster - Chamber - Traces of Liberty on takuuvarmaa Haamuprikaatia, vaikka Clawmasterin muutamat riffit kuulostavatkin aavistuksen liian tutuilta. Siksipä aavistuksen kevytotteisempi - toki kertosäkeessä myös raskaasti rouhiva - Chamber miellyttää korvaa enemmän. Rehdisti mureammin riffittelevä Traces of Liberty on keskitempoisessa menevyydessään myös vallan mainio biisi. Divine Act of Lunacy on puolestaan levyn ensimmäinen hieman heikompi biisi. Positiivista siinä on se, että biisi kuulostaa hiukan erilaiselta, mutta rehellisesti sanottuna etenkin kappaleen kertosäe on heikko; tuntuu kuin muuten mainiosti jälleen kerran laulava Manne Ikonen ei saisi itsestään siinä irti aivan parasta suoritusta. Ensimmäisellä kuuntelukerralla tämä biisi itse asiassa sai minut jättämään levyn kuuntelun kesken, eikä veisu edelleenkään tunnu muiden sävellyksien tasoiselta. Kuutosraita Grain palauttaa tyylin ja tason totutuille lukemille ollen tyypillisestä hiljaa-lujaa-vaihtelustaan huolimatta levyn ehdotonta eliittiä. Breakwaterin pääriffi on vuorostaan hieman puisevaa pehmo-Neurosista, mutta kappaleen kitara- ja laulumelodiat pelastavat huomattavan paljon. Cult of Decayssa raskaampi väliosa toimii sen sijaan mausteena todella komeasti, kun biisi muuten turvautuu jälleen melodisempaan ilmaisuun. Tempoltaan hyvinkin maltillinen Soulcarvers ehtii kahdeksassa minuutissa tekemään vielä yhden läpileikkauksen aiheesta "hemmetin hieno Ghost Brigade -ralli". Se osoittaa jälleen kerran myös sen, että Ghost Brigaden parhaat biisit saattavat näennäisesti olla "riffittömiä", jos puhutaan siis riffeistä niin kuin käsite metallin yhteydessä yleensä ymmärretään. Soulcarversissa näppäillään, maalaillaan ja tunnelmoidaan sointuja välillä voimallisemmin rusikoiden, mutta suoranaista riffittelyä siinä ei ole. Päästyäni yli omasta alkunihkeydestäni huomaan nauttivani Until Fear No Longer Defines Usista lähes yhtä paljon kuin Isolation Songsista. Uutukainen tuntuu edeltäjäänsä tasavahvemmalta levyltä, jolla ei ehkä sittenkään ole aivan Concealed Revulsionsin, Into the Black Lightin tai Secrets of the Earthin tapaisia superbiisejä. In The Woods, Chamber, Grain, Torn ja Soulcarvers haastavat ne tosin tasapäisesti. On hienoa, että Until Fear No Longer Defines Us on samantasoinen levy kuin Isolation Songs olematta kuitenkaan lopulta täsmälleen sama levy.
