The Book Of Suffering: Tome I
After three decades of ungentle supremacy Cryptopsy still make blasphemy sound fresh, but many underground metalheads trace the JUNO Award winners’ resurgence to the two EPs they released during the mid-2010s. “This is without a doubt the best material the band has released in the new century” Decibel wrote about the opening chapter of The Book of Suffering. As expected, Cryptopsy perform open face surgery with brutal technique on Tome I. Opener “Detritus (The One They Kept)” tears between manic riffs, precision blast beats and a skull-crushing breakdown. But with this EP, the Canadian band added a sick new narrative twist. Each song is bound and gagged by a gravaged tales of the phobophiles among us who inflict unthinkable suffering, including a twisted-but-true recount of a Greyhound bus trip gone horribly awry. The Book of Suffering: Tome I was released independently back in 2015, which over the years, made it harder to hunt down. Now that the EP has been reissued on CD, fans can finally suffer in peace.
